According to Frank Isola: Smith's agent, Leon Rose, met with Garden Chairman James Dolan following Wednesday's Knicks' win over Sacramento to finalize a contract. It is believed that Smith, who has also attracted the interest of the Clippers, will receive the Knicks' $2.5 million exception. Rose also represents Anthony, who has lobbied the club to add Smith, an explosive scorer who can also be erratic at times. He has averaged 12.5 points per game over seven NBA seasons.
In order to create a roster spot for Smith, the Knicks would have to release a player. It would not be a hard guess to whom that player will be. All sane
judgement points to Mike Bibby as the one to get released. however, it's no secret that Coach Mike does not like Balkman. Be that it may, rest assure it will be
Mike Bibby's farewell as soon as JR is signed.
What does JR Smith bring to the Knicks? 1. A true shooting guard that plays defense and would only get better as the result of LIN being the floor General.
Smith and Melo have basically grown up together in Denver. 2. Less double teams on Stat and Melo. There is not a team in the NBA that would leave Smith
unguarded to cover Melo or Stat... Smith is a dangerous shooter and the league knows it. He has phenomenal range, can drive and keep the floor spaced for the pick and roll. 3. It would allow 6'7 Landry Fields a chance to play his true position... Melo's backup. Landry would thrive with less pressure and regain his Rookie
confidence that we are somewhat seeing return. Moreover, JR Smith is the only experienced SG on our team. He has been in the playoffs 5 out of 7 years of his career! JR Smith is only 26 years old, born on September 9, 1985 and was one of the last of players that went from high School straight to the Pros. In his second playoff series of his young career, Smith had a stellar showing during a first-round match-up with the Los Angeles Lakers. He played 27.0 minutes, averaging 18.3 points per game on 53.5% shooting. He also had a 31.8% three-point shooting percentage. Although the Nuggets were swept in the first round, Laker's Kobe Bryant said in a post-game interview that, "J. R. is a good young player. He was a lot to handle."
Our starting Line Up would be as Follows:
PG- Jeremy LIN
SG- JR Smith
SF- Carmelo Anthony
PF- Amare Stoudimyer
C- Tyson Chandler
PG- Barron Davis
SG- Iman Shumpert
SF- Landry Fields/Bill Walker
PF- Novak/Bill Walker/ Balkman
C- Jarred Jeffries
Either way.. this is a dream team with a real floor General in Jeremy Lin!
CYA @ The Parade!
BTW...SMITH IS FROM FREEHOLD, NEW JERSEY!
JR SMITH Playoffs STATS
To Knicks fans who just heard Stephen A.'s pregame radio show: George Karl just gave us all a lot to be concerned about regarding JR Smith's acquisition. Totally destroyed him on air calling him a "good, bad player... Has a lot of talent, but makes bad decisions and plays that cost the team... the ball sticks to him..."
Now, let me state that I think George Karl is a bitter and angry man despite beating cancer, and took the opportunity to trash his old players, but he knows more about having JR Smith play on your team more than any of us on here. The overall gist was he didn't think getting Smith was smart this season. Said it would've been better to have a lot of practice time to get him briefed on D'antoni's system and get him gelling with the team.
All that said... I HOPE he's wrong in our case. There's plenty of upside to having JR as our sixth man, but with it comes plenty of risk too. My fingers are crossed.
Enjoy the game.
Here's a link I thought Peaceman would love.
If bulls had balls they'd give milk.JR has been around for awhile, when did you ever see him effective at the point? The guy is a scorer. That of and in itself is not a cardinal sin, actually it's more of an ordinal sin.Didn't you hate playing with guys like that. They never passed!D'Antoni is nowhere near the coach Karl is, particularly as a disciplinarian, and Karl had trouble reining this guy in.No one is disputing his talent, this smaacks of over/uber managing. We're scoring enough points right now and playing good D.Management seems to think the JR risk is worth a gamble this year for a chip.Sounds like D'Ant is being set-up.If he wins, he might get resigned, might because they may feel someone else has already been promised the up and coming team's job, if he fails he's kicked to the curb because he has to take the weight of not reaching expectations with all the amasss-ed talent.I kind of feel sorry for D'Ant, unless he wins it all, or comes close enough to impress someone else to give him a job (tough without a Nash clone) he is gonna get canned. What we need, barring BD's improbable resurrection is a backup point that can pass and defend.Jeremy, turnover prone as a rookie, is not Super Duper Lintendo and will wear down as the playoffs approach. We know that is D'Ant's way, play his guards into the ground. Can't blame him this go-around, he's trying to save his career.JR is a timebomb for a good guy weak spined n'disciplinarian cheerleader like Mike.If you think there is gonna be confusion in the endgame with Amare and Melo try throwing JR into the mix.I'm sure JR is thinking this is a showcase to get some serious coin next year...from somebody, 2 1/2 mil is chump change. That in mind doesn't bode well for a rookie point who is just trying to play ball and doesn't have his head in NBA politics or $.He's just happy to be there.JR is coming with an agenda.Whoever is signing him has an agenda. Our only agenda is winning, oops Lining. It may work out and Peace will look like a genius. What are the chances?
Here's the latest word on this JR Smith deal: http://www.postingandtoasting.com/2012/2/17/2804550/dee-the-knicks-will-cut-renaldo-balkman-to-sign-j-r-smith
Says Balkman to be cut because Bibby is more important right now as backup PG. Also says a deal involving Billy Walker, Toney and Balkman never materialized. Too bad. Also, Alan Hahn's saying JR will come off bench (http://www.sulia.com/source/S-246291/), which I think is more important. Our current starting five is great and their chemistry even better. Don't change the recipe if the meal tastes delicious, right? As you'll see in Hahn's top tweet, the Knicks' bench now consists of JR, Shump, JJ, Harrellson (when he returns after All-Star game), Novak, who has been stepping up, and hopefully Baron.
To update your projected lineup, Peace, I'm going with this:
SG- Landry (that is unless he starts to falter, then expect JR to replace)
PG- Baron Davis, Bibby
SG- JR Smith, Shump
SF- Bill Walker, Shump, Novak
PF- Novak, Jared Jeffries, Harrellson
C- Jarred Jeffries, Harrellson
I'm hopeful this acquisition works out, but like Lives, I'm a bit scared that JR will maintain his "coach killer/team killer" ways. Just look at his history with Byron Scott and George Karl and what went down in China last month
2: http://forums.hoops4life.com/topic/2844-jr-smith%E2%80%99s-sister-reportedly-choked-woman-during-fight-with-chinese-fans/ (this instance, JR jumped into the stands and started fighting, I read)
Thanks Lunchbox, JR Smith is Low Risk High reward. He does not have a contract like Amare or Melo. Not only did Melo want him, also Kobe and Chris Paul. I'll trust their judgement over Sour Grapes Karl!
We have little to lose and a chip to gain. LGK
I trust this statement : We did a lot of due diligence, obviously, on this,” Glen Grunwald, the interim general manager, said. “And we have people that have, let’s say, insight, personal experience with J. R. And they all came out in favor of this move.”
Lunchbox, you will find the wealth of us similar to one of our beloved bloggers handle " AntiNYsportsmedia" we take everything they say with a grain of Salt..which is why almost 7 years ago, we started our own blog!
Excellent O&B..LOVE IT!
@Tman here's my reply
TMAN..your saying JR can't pass???????? You'll be a big fan soon, like it or not!
"Peace Will look like a Genius"
Not really. I was wrong on Lin, however, I'm dead Balls Accurate about JR Smith. We stay healthy and WE WIN IT ALL THIS YEAR!
@Tman See my comment below. Echoed your sentiment. You nailed it with the over-managing comment. Dolan gets really competitive when other teams are vying for a player. Even if the Knicks don't need that player, he'll still go all in for them just to beat out the other teams. See the Melo-drama as apparently Dolan bid against himself on that one. You're right. We're scoring just what we need to be. The bench is delivering just fine. Shump's 6th man status has elevated and JR might quash that.
Here's a scary prediction: When the 2nd unit is on the floor, JR will go ball crazy and you'll see the movement and distribution cease. I hope I'm wrong. I really do. I fear I'm not, though.
@Lunchbox27 What is there to say.He scored 37 points and his team lost.As for the off the court stuff, reminds me of a certain Antonio Davis incident where he lost a few games for going into the stands after someone said something to his wife.He felt he had no choice. That's understandable but his family hurt the team when he was forced to man up and go into the crowd. Can't win chips that way
If your Sister were involved in a fight in another country, would you just watch or help her out? The guy is human and he's only 26 and has more talent than anyone not named Melo on the knicks. Give the
Kid a chance before you make him a Demon!
That source is Tommy Dees of the Knicks Blog.
Why would they cut Balkman when they owe him 1.8 mill next year?
Smart money says Bibby's Gone. I'll take all bets!
@Peaceman You're right in that respect. A lot of star players wanted him. And so far in this game, he's looking incredible. One thing I totally forgot about... Tyson Chandler. Why? That dude is the real leader of this team (sorry Stat fans). IF JR or any player were to get out of line, you best believe Tyson is in their ear telling them to curb that shit.
This can be wonderful. I'm hella stoked right now.
@Peaceman I didn't say he can't pass, I'm more concerned with when he will want to.By the way when my son threw the behind the back doobie I sat him.Go down to the Rucker if you want to watch the Entertainers at play. When was the last time you saw Kobe throw the behind the back?MJ, West, Robertson, Frazier even Nash. What makes you think they can't, or is it they have winning on their minds?
If we got him, we got him.I try to be a positive person so I'm through criticizing the deal ....for now.Anyone SHOULD be able to play with a good point. They make life easier. We still need a backup.Personally, I think Tony D can do it if he gets his mind, which D'Antoni totally fycked up, right. We also need a backup for Tyson.I know you like Jorts, but he and Jordan are not ready for the big time yet.Amare is not a playoff C. and if we're gonna do something he needs to concentrate on his spot.I truly hope this isn't the beginning of Team Turmoil.Having a great locker room where guys are ready to watch each others backs is a big part of winning. If you've been around winning teams you know that.Talent is way overrated.Good teams rip talented teams with no chemistry apart with regularity.Pro basketball is a nasty business, just like most of the entertainment business. What the Knicks have right now is the embryo of a very nice squad.I'd be very careful of messing that up.D'Ant is not calling for this signing. He can't be that stupid.Whoever is advising Dolan is playing their own game. And I don't think it's our game.
@Lunchbox27 The thing that scares me the most about this deal without the obvious becoming more obvious with every article (See me above, the Times, the News, etc.)is that Dolan demanded this deal be made.Kiss of death right there. That, Zeke and Peaceman's endorsement is like being on SI's cover instead of the swimsuit issue. They could be right, but the rest of the b-ball world doubts it.Aah. the life of a contrarian.Luckily this is a short season and we won't have to wait long for this Titanic's maiden voyage.JR up on the prow with Melo shooting off," we're kings of the World!"
TMAN.. This BUD is for you! Enjoy!
@Peaceman@Lunchbox27 Exactly how many more chances does he get because he can run and jump higher than the next guy? Here's a suppose. You own a business, your best salesman , worker, doctor is brilliant at what he does, but he keeps getting in all kinds of trouble on and off the job. What do you do?Pay him more? That's the NBA's answer. What's yours?
@Peaceman Everything you just said is the truth... BUT, my point was drama seems to follow this guy every where he goes. Both of his previous coaches had to bench him indefinitely due to his lack of team work, consistency, and poor attitude.
However, I am giving him a chance. I'm just expressing some concern based on his entire NBA history. Dude is one of the most gifted players in this league, but his attitude has prevented him from truly shinning. I hope age and his travels allow him the motivation and focus to get a fresh start in his home town (NJ guy) and gel with this team.
@Peaceman Knicks cut Balkman. It's official. Good move, too. The dude was the last man on the bench.
Like it or not ..it'sour game now..all they way to a CHIP! DOCK IT!
@Peaceman@Lunchbox27 Read it , lived through it.What does it have to do with West catching a few elbows.Read West's new book where he spills his guts about his career. He tells how he feels about everyone, black or white on this earth. He mentions nothing about Reed breaking his nose.Stop reading between non existent lines.
Tman.. you realize that at that time.. you could not have a Black-man punch a White-man and expect it to be just? There were still "colored drinking fountains" in the south and Reed could not stay at the same Hotels his White teammates stayed at!
You want MSM media to confirm the obvious in the mid 60's to early 70's?????
Jerry West-all six feet, three inches and 188 pounds of him— began the ... I've broken it twice by running into Willis Reed of the Knicks.
@Peaceman@Lunchbox27 I am re-iterating because the statement is so completely outrageous.West's nose has been broken numerous times, but in the most honorable way, playing the game.He NEVER EVER was in a fight on the court and NEVER EVER had his nose broken doing violence.I assume you are referring to the Willis/LaRusso debacle of long ago.West had no part in it or any other brawl I know of.You should apologize for that one or bring some proof.
@Peaceman@Tman I've never killed someone in a car accident: http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=4298594.
Any off-court behavior DOES affect the team. Serving suspesions, jail time, etc, keeps you from playing and contributing. That drama then brings negative press and attention on the player and team, which distracts and disrupts the team. Look at Plax for the Giants. His off-field activites took him off the team and they went on to blow the whole season because they didn't have their star receiver and it became a huge distraction to them.
I get it. You dig this guy. I do too. Just hoping he's cleaned up his act.
As long as he has not molested a child or physically hurt someone..I could give a Rat's ass about WTF he does off court! As long as JR Smith's 26 year old body is winning Games for the New York knicks..I'm Good!
And WHAT HAS HE DONE SO BAD IN THE PAST THAT YOU AND I OR MAYBE OTHER FANATICS HAVEN'T DONE AT THE RIPE OLD AGE OF 26???????
@Peaceman Revisit what statement? The poor decisions off the court? Can't find the article I read yesterday, but it echoed what everyone in sports is saying. JR Smith is incredibly talented, but his off-the-court issues have caused his past teams problems and distractions (the fatal car accident, some "incident" at a night club, fight with Knicks that got him suspended for 10 games, and something I never heard before... apparently he had gang-related tweets last year that got him into trouble with the Nuggets).
I'll repeat: I am hopeful he curbs his attitude, becomes a team player and helps bring the Knicks deep into the playoffs (sorry, but they're not winning a ring this year with Miami, Chicago, and OKC playing the way they are). The last thing this team needs is the JR Smith of years past (including last year with Denver. Just read George Karl's statements on trying to coach him).
Point well taken Lunchbox.. however, I truly don't expect to revisit your statement. JR is the real deal.
Anything less than a chip is a BIG failure!
Please don't believe the Media. CHRIS MULLIN KILLED A PERSON WHILE DRUNK DRIVING...
The Media Ignored that fact and look at him today?
Considered GM Material! It's what our very own MODI calls "White Privilege" Exactly what did JR do so bad?? Is it worse than what any of us may have done in our early twenty's? I made a hell of a lot of mistakes as a youth... but don't most humans???
@Peaceman He also has a knack for making poor decisions off the court (jail time, fatal car accident, fights, etc), so let's home the temptation of NYC passes over him.
@Peaceman Have no fear. We can't lose Lin over the summer. Here's why: http://espn.go.com/nba/story/_/id/7583558/nba-how-new-york-knicks-keep-jeremy-lin. I also highly doubt he'll bail on the team that gave him his shot and made him a star. He seems really loyal.
Oh and JR signed a two-year, $4.3 mil contract with the Knicks: http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/basketball/knicks/smith-confirms-twitter-joining-ny-knicks-shooting-guard-reportedly-signs-two-year-4-3m-deal-article-1.1024459.
Looks like we'll keep this squad intact, though this latest deal prevents the team from spending money in the offseason for anyone new, unless we do a trade (could offer, Walker, Bibby, Douglas) for someone.
Sorry Lunchbox.. I found the official link that Balkman was cut on RealGM. I was hoping Bibby would get cut because I believe we could have traded Balkman and his remaining 1.8 million in a deal by trade dead line or during the Summer. Having his pay remain on our Cap may cause trouble in resigning LIN and JR.
@Peaceman Re: why the Knicks kept Bibby?
Here's a Tweet from Howard Beck of the NYT:
Howard Beck @HowardBeckNYT
Knicks fans/Bibby-bashers: He's still a better PG than Douglas or Shump at this point. They need experience behind Lin.
Here's Alan Hahn on the same subject, and he has access to Knicks decision makers since he works for MSG:
Alan Hahn @alanhahn
"@sethrlevine: @alanhahn I don't understand this move. Why not Bibby?" Need PG depth. Baron is not a given.
This is where I got my information from when I stated that Balkman was being cut. Just read these journos' Twitter and you'll get the latest information on the Knicks.
@Peaceman Link to what statement?
Link please to that statement.
