Update: Shawne Williams was suspended one game for throwing a punch and Marvin Williams was suspended for two games for throwing more than one punch and "fighting."
Williams v. Williams. This was not a family feud (unless they are related and don't know it) but it sure looked like a soft scuffle between siblings. Shawne Williams probably thinks its a good thing that Daddy NBA has videotape when it metes out the punishment to these fighting cousins.
Some may say that Shawne Williams simply attracts bad things and others would agree that he has earned his spot in the Knicks' short rotation. No matter what you think, you must agree that Williams has earned his spot in Knicks boxing lore right along side the "Melo hit and run" and the "Van Gundy Leg Wrestle." He has also gained the attention of the NBA's front office which frowns upon throwing wayward punches. Shawne says that those were not punches he threw, those were defensive blocks to protect himself from the wild swings of his namesake, Marvin. Shawne said, "I was protecting myself. Coming across half-court, he bumped me, I bumped him and he mushed me in the back of the head. I wasn't going to fight him. I wanted to let him know I wasn't backing down. For him to swing at me, that's a different. I feel I didn't swing back and restrained myself."
This original video seems to corroborate Shawne's interpretation after he was whacked from the back by Marvin. What do you think? What do you think the NBA will do to Shawne who just took on a bigger role in the rotation?
With Shawne Williams out and Stoudemire "questionable" for tonight's game against Detroit, D'Antoni may be foreced to use Mozgov and Randolph by default. If neither performs well, D'Antoni will contend that he was justified in benching them in the first place. That neither will have had much game-time experience with the team will not be factored into his explanation. Thus, here's hoping they both (1) see burn and (2) contribute to a Knick win. LGK
No biggie, one goes down, another steps up.Shyte happens.Worry about Amare, period. The other thing is it's Detroit, should have been a win.Still could be, step up time for the dog with true grit!Git 'er done & here we go!Sorry, too much tv.
Bullshit decision. Shawne should have connected on a good punch to Marvin if he was going to get suspended. Stern got this one wrong.
I think the NBA had a tough call to make but they got it right. It's a shame SWill is suspended for defending himself but he was rather aggressive in doing so. 1 game is justified. I didn't mind at all, seeing the Knicks in a tussle once again. Sometimes that brings teams together. I don't think anybody thinks the Knicks will lay down. Marvin would have gotten his ass beat.
Beck of the Times on time,
Charles Barkley, making his first visit to the Garden in 10 years, told two New York reporters: “I get mad when people try to say they’re back. They’re not back. They’re a lot more interesting.”
“Back” is in the eye of the beholder. Beating a wounded Miami team is not enough to make a case. The occasional upset of an elite team will not satisfy anyone long term. Contending for titles remains the ultimate goal, and no one is claiming the Knicks are there yet. But the revival is just 45 games old and the Knicks are both interesting and competitive. They are more back than not."
No wonder you write for the Times, pretty sensible, lgk
Shawne Williams didn't throw a punch. He seemed to have used his elbow in defensive anticipation of a scuffle and that elbow seems to have inadvertently made contact with Marvin's face. Though Marvin was toppled for a moment by Shawne's self defensive use of the meat of his forearm and elbow for defensive reasons. That shouldn't constitue a punch. Merely a defensive manuever that inadvertenly went awry. LOL!
You get em Shawned!
@Post_up_Prince Seems Like if what you say happens, does happen. Then, D'Antoni is a product of his own self corralling and self limiting circular reasoning. Everyone knows that a flower does not bloom in the darkness absent water and the rich soil of a dedicated caretaker. Such is life, such is the Knicks plight under D'Amphony!
@Peaceman Oh that's right, David "Stern" Mubarak is the municipal, appellate and Supreme court judge.
@Peaceman Shawne should appeal.
@Peaceman I think had Shawne connected on an actual punch, Marvin would have been knocked out. No way Marvin gets a two game suspension in that scenario.
@AaronHodges I agree Dubsta or A Dub or A Double whatever handle is appropriate to call you in these here parts.
Shawne didn't technically throw a punch he swung an elbow. It means he's smarter than he's given credit for, for self defending while adapting his style to avoid the distinction. But I'm sure to the Stern eye an elbow and punch are one and the same.
Shawne with those quick swing elbows would have mauled Marvin.
@Tman Yes objectivity and the best crew of writers outside of KFB. We do it for the love of the camaraderie. But some loot would be nice.
Nice way to parse the argument and talk in degrees. The Knicks are better and on their way back but it will take much more to bring them back, . . . much more than Melo also.
