History has a funny way of repeating itself. When the Knicks became relevant after the Ewing draft... a Coach who led an unknown team to the promised land of the NCAA final four,,, became the knicks New Head Coach despite his total lack of NBA Head Coaching experience......Rick Pitino.
As of last Saturday Knicks fanatics bracketology has something in common with the majority of America. We all had our brackets busted all the way to the final four by VCU. This "at-large selection" has an uncanny similarity to that Providence team coached in 1986-87 by Rick Pitino. This feat was big enough for Pitino ( a former Knick assistant under Huble Brown) to be offered the young but talented Ewing led Knicks head coaching Job.
VCU'S "Shaka Smart" has an uncanny similar style of coaching and it's no secret that America is saying "Who is this Guy and this team?"
Smart's team plays a style of basketball known as "havoc." Smart described his "havoc" defensive philosophy during his introductory press conference as, "We are going to wreak havoc on our opponent's psyche and their plan of attack." On the court, the "havoc" defensive mindset is visible through the heavy use of the full court press and pressing after made baskets to disrupt opponents' timing of offensive sets.
This again is an uncanny similarity to Rick Pitino's signature. BTW.. Smart's given name was bestowed in honor of the famous Zulu warrior.
Pitno's Knicks made the playoffs his first year with a record of 38-44. His second and last year with the knicks he won the division with a 52-30 record. This was the team that Swept Charles Barkley's Philly team 3-0 in the first round of the playoffs, then grabbed a Janitors broom ( led by Rod Strickland, Trent tucker and Mark Jackson) and team pushed the broom across the floor to mock the 76's on their home court. as being "swept." The venom created in Barkley's mouth from that incident still spews today whenever he mentions the Knicks.
Shaka Smart is only 33 years old. Perhaps this young Coach is the right fit for our young talent? TD, Derrick Brown, Shawn and Shelden Williams, Landry Fields, Bill Walker are all young and built for Smart's type defensive pressure. Melo & Amare could benefit from this type approach. Billups would get plenty of rest and be the fourth quarter floor general only he can be! Jared Jeffries would most likely be the one Knick that would look like a totally different Player in this type system. Jeffries size and quickness is a perfect match for this "Havoc" defense!
This is one of few options if you believe Mike Dantoni must go.
Smart was smart to re-up for 8 years at $1.35 Mil. Unless it will be for the NIT or to grind against St. John's, there will be no Smart sighting at the Mecca. Seems like the script is already written--we're just some Alpha Squirrels tryna bust a nut.

if Carmelo Anthony scores at least 35 points Sunday night against the Cavaliers, he will join Bernard King and Dick Barnett as the only Knick players to record 35 points or more in four consecutive games. King has the franchise record with five straight from Dec. 21-29, 1984.
New show. New format. New intro (with some Peaceman sounds). We're good to go. Be there. The game may run over, but we'll start on time.
With a Knicks win and a Charlotte loss tonight, the Knicks will clinch a playoff berth. So join in on KNICKS FANATICS BLOG RADIO @ 8:30PM. I'm sure during the LBE we'll keep tabs on the Wiz & Bobcats!
Hate to be an I told U so, but check the record, I did.E City has the talent, but this is probably dumpster diving THIS season. Not enuff time to integrate him properly.Desperation plan, they see they can't do it this year with just what they have.Boston may be in the same spot with ShaqBooty. We'll see soon enuff.Conn Baby, Conn.Kemba, the one ta Rememba
Eddy Curry to the heat? Can Riley get some quality out of him?
Yahoo: The Miami Heat are progressing toward signing center Eddy Curry for the playoffs, front office sources told Yahoo! Sports. After Heat president Pat Riley watched Curry work out in Chicago in recent days, he’s made plans to bring the 7-footer to Miami early next week for another workout and a medical physical with the ultimate objective to sign him, sources said.
A Marable follower, now I'm really impressed.Watch for the explosives when his book hits the rags.
Cal beats Cal, good headline.Conn Cal cons NCAA again, hopefully for the last time. Both Cals belong in jail.Kemba though is the one true (Truth!) Conn expatriate from the BX.Watch and learn what NYC used to be about when All aspects of the game ruled the schoolyard.Kemba is a throwback, a Tim Hardaway offensive clone who thinks on the floor, passes and defends.Love the kid.The only problem I see for Kemba on Monday is for the very first time in a long time they will be the favorites. Is that the Kiss of death?Look for Conns bigs to dominate and decimate.Sheldon is the real deal, Howard isn't, but Kemba is butta and betta than both. What a pleasant break from the feel good play bad NIX.Hope they are watching and seeing what chemistry looks like. They're still ours so LGK.
You want bad wheels Stat to press. He would last 2/3 of a season playing that defense. Also Melo lacks the desire or defensive quickness to play the press. So far 2/3 of your starting front-court can't press. I say we draft 5-second rounders and allow them to press(lol).
RIP..Dr .Manning Marable. It your new work & old will allow your spirit to stay with us.
Peace & Blessings
DX Draft-Express has us Taking Kentucky's Terrence Jones.
VCU came up short but great game for the dogs!
The two "Underdogs" are in an epic battle Butler leads VCU 36-35 15 minutes left!
Hope some of you are watching ... this is a Classic.
Every AAu outfit in NYC and environs plays "press and mess".Pitino didn't invent it.He was a NY guy who adapted it successfully to the Nix with Ewing anf Jackson.Jackson was actually in shape as a rookie, and led the attack his own AAU clubs had been cheating with all his life.Cheating because it is a style that allows guys to NOT play man to man and that is to the detrriment of the player in the long run, see Carmelo/Amare for present day examples. Some coaches see this attack as a draw to play uptempo offense, no D, and attract Lazy Assed Super Wannabees at every level, right down to grade school. Then you have these same defensively challenged failures, at every level going out and preaching their form of the gospel to the neighborhood talent and wiping out less talented versions of themselves. It all comes down to putting in the work on both sides, coach and player, and learning the fundamentals of the game.Versatility, thy name is individual and sometimes team success. Is Shaka the One.I don't know, you have to look at the body of work and see if this is all there is.You might want to know what happens to the "havoc" D when it faces an offense that picks it apart with simple precise passes that break the full court zone press. It gives up lay up after lay up which is why it can't be your only weapon. You need several, including a good man to man. This assumes you have guys with brains and experience. This is a youth final four so cross out experience and it is really a toss of the dice.I like Conn if they can slow Kentucky down.As for the Nix, Pitino's defense is anathema to old guys, unless you have a long bench you WANT to use.It also presupposes you know what to do with it.Pitino proved you could use pressure to win in the pros.It doesn't have to be 48 minutes and it doesn't have to be every game.It should be a major weapon in a holster. You have a few games left that may be meaningless. Why not use your bench and try something new?You need to rest your big two anyway. Most coaches, like everyone else in society are sheep. They just follow the latest trend or stick to a bankrupt tradition.D'Antoni is deep under the gun.His dice are loaded with No'D Amare/Melo.Why not use a system they are used to and can fit in.Press the shyte out of your opponents and create havoc.Let loos the dawgs of war!Make it interesting.LGK
History has proven that the "frenetic pace" or "wreaking havoc" style of play in the NBA is not sustainable. Look at history. What was the players' response to Pitino when asked to begin pressing or playing full court press from jump? Seems like the style works for college and not for the pros--at least not until come what, May. Remember the rumblings about the players' legs giving way after a back-to-back? The Knicks faithful are crying about not having a big man to bang and board. Look at 'Amphony's history of using big men as traditional centers. The SSOM guru is the root cause of the problem at the Mecca.
You may be right about a Final Four coach stepping onto the big stage next year. It is a different experience coaching into the second round of the playoffs onto the shiny stuff. Look for a final four out of the East coming into the Mecca.

@Peaceman Steady says he goes and gets IT tonight Peace. Maybe the MSG suits go on and hang up the #30 jersey this spring since BK is signed on to do some work during the playoffs. If Rodman could be hung in Detroit then the King should get his props at the Mecca. We shall soon see. That 5 straight is subject to fall also. The offense is going through Mello and he's holding the rock like he brought IT to the Mecca. Maybe next year and the next coach will fix that bad habIT.

@Peaceman Peace, this move was foretod since July when Eddy traveled to Cleveland before La Decision. The rags speculated IT was to tell him all the reasons not to come to NY. The real reason he went there was to go for a job interview. Mike Miller did the same thing. LebRun has the same handlers in Rose and World Wide so this is a no-brainer. ESitty was not ever going to trust 'Amphony after what happened with Steph. All 'Amphoni did was follow the script/instructions laid out by DolanITe in moving those two pieces unceremoniously. ESitty never got IT and wondered where the love went. Well the Love went to Minni. The script just plays out before our very eyes. And "Yes, he can" be a difference maker in a short series. He could stick around next year and have the last laugh on all the doubters and lower IQ'd sheeps waiting for Tabasi at the Mecca. They line their cages with words from papers employing Boils Berman, Mitch da Grill, da Khan alpha boy in Long Island, Vexsy da lush, and da @$$hola. Steady Bloguin but know you bloged IT here.
God speed Eddy. Miami is not NY so if you stay away from Joe's you don't have to be ESitty no mo'.Good luck until ya'll play us.

@Tman Coach, just when the NC2A thought they were gonna stick it to the Con in Conn, the wiley Coyote stuck IT to them. Cal in Conn could not have a better road to the Big Dance with that low end seed. If Khaddafi and Mubarak should give youth a chance, so too should the wiley old cat. In fact, Steady says any X/O type who has been in place for more years than the oldest player on the team should be asked to move on for the Smarts of the world. Then again, the NC2A iz a bidness and don't know one wanna mess wit da man's money. Come what May or June, IT should be laughing when IT gets on the NBA floor once again. Getcha beer, here, here! Popcorn, popcorn, anybody needs a popcorn?

@Statesman One of the fathers of Afrocentricity has fallen. Malefi Asante and Maulana Karenga are getting up there in dog days too. The torch was never passed. Best sellers are coming from the likes of Steve Harvey and that uncredentialed mouthpiece on TV. Will the Black/African/-American intelligentsia please stand up. We will need more than his spirit States. His soul should R.I.P. from what we know thus far.
@Statesman Wow. Dr. Marable? RIP. An Icon for sure.
@Peaceman This is some dangerous mess Bloggas. So now this youngin' goes on and reads this press clipping, blows off the rest of his classes, and begins to live like he will be crossing the stage at Radio City Music Hall to shake the Lil' General's hand come draft night. This kid should stay in school and avoid 'Amphony BAMN. Look at what happened to A Randolph, Corey B and D Brown. Thos kids have major upside and the Mecca's current signal caller displays his laziness and unwillingness to COACH according to strengths and bring players along. Note to Terrence Jones: If you come out too soon, just remember this line--"Just like a good neighbor, State Farm is there".

@Steady If you remember AL Bianchi as our GM... then you Know Pitino was making Peanuts. He left the Knicks with a 52-30 record in his second year, because Kentucky was offering him 5 times the Salary. Ewing and Oak loved his style and teams were
not looking forward to playing us because we'd be in your face full-court 99% of the time. Thats not SSOM. You have to have the Horses and youth...but a Chip can be won with that style defense!
saying yes to a lung transplant was not a good decision. The immune suppressant drugs Manning had to take ( X 10 what a kidney transplant takes) just to keep his body from rejecting the lungs made his post transplant days a true "Living Hell." Perhaps Manning Marable should have read Chief Tecumseh, Shawnee Nation 1768-1813.
"When it comes your time to die, be not like those whose hearts are filled with the fear of death, so that when their time comes they weep and pray for a little more time to live their lives over again in a different way. Sing your death song and die like a hero going home." The white man says, there is freedom and justice for all. We have had "freedom and justice," and that is why we have been almost exterminated.
@Steady @Statesman I admit that I thought Marable, the relative youngin', was a bit Afro-fluff (in a Marxian kind of way) for my appetite which required a full-course meal. But he preceded the likes of West, Dyson, Glaude, Imani Perry and the popularity of Gates with non-commercial provocation and improvisation. There is a new breed that is much more responsive to the marketplace -- commercially acceptable packaging -- than the old heads trying to figure out how to"keep it real" and make a living. The torch was passed, but recipients used it to light up a store front instead of the front line. Organizers -- in the pulpit, the classroom, in entertainment -- became business people with clear capitalistic principals. They saw no contradiction in securing capital and fighting capital. They even feel more comfortable owning the means of production than organizing workers
What it all means, I don't know, but Asante and Karazy Karenga all prove that diversity of voices is critical to addressing issues. Even the voices of Cosby and pimp Harvey serve a purpose -- you just don't want to rely on their voices as the one to lead you out of the forest -- whether it is the dense male/female relationship forest or the education forest which is nothing but a bunch of tree stumps whose growth was stunted by human hands.
@Steady Hahahaha another insurance salesman?
@Peaceman To use a Peaceman wise crack, a Chip can be won with a style where the offense scores points and the defense makes stops. Getting the pro player to "buy-in" to a system is more than a notion. The NBA is a players' league not a coaches' league. The players must buy the bunk the coach is selling or be willing to tune in at all times. Did you see the way the Spurs players tuned out Pop last night--when they would not foul in the closing seconds. He damned nearly ran onto the court. They pro'ly got an ear full after the game but there is a point where the coach becomes less than effective and the style called "press and mess", "hack and jack", "run and gun", "Seven Seconds and Loss" (no typo), "roam and zone", etc. or whatever IT may be called become pointless. At the end of the day, players play and coaches coach while Bloggas just get their brackets busted and blog about it on Fantasy Island or in these here parts. IT boils down to makes and stops. Whatever its gonna take to get more makes and cause more stops will get us that coveted Chip.

@Peaceman @Steady @Statesman Peaceman always with the medical pearl to add perspective. Very interesting. Very. But one would ask, if he loved living and was told that a double lung transplant was the only way to extend his life and continue to contribute his work to the world, why not chose living over dying "gracefully." or with "honor." People do it all the time. I might not go through a double lung transplant now that you have advised me of the horrors, but I think I might try to live a little longer if I could. I know I wish some of my love ones had lived a little longer. Just my selfishness I guess.
@Lives @Statesman You hIT d anail on da head Lives. @Tman @Steady "Showtime" is usually referred to the Lakers of the 1980s, and primarily the Pat Riley era from 1982-1990. This era was characterized by a high octane full court press combined with fast breaking open floor style of play led by Magic Johnson, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and James Worthy. The "Showtime" Lakers won NBA titles in 1980, 1982, 1985, 1987 and 1988.
