Uh Oh!! Before the end of the pre-season, D'Antoni was hoping for 42-45 wins. He recently anointed Stoudemire as the one-man wrecking crew who may be able to get us to the playoffs, despite his teammates. Amar'e however seems to be backing away from his lofty goals since seeing his teammates perform during the pre-season. He is aiming for the playoffs but will look ot anything better than last year's 29 win season as progress. Thirty wins anyone?
"The Knicks haven't made the playoffs in nine, 10 years. Anything better than we did last year is a success. Last year wasn't that good. Anything better than that would be a step in the right direction. But playoffs is something we're looking forward to and we're trying to get to that point. We're not the biggest physical team. Some nights we will be outrebounded, but we have to stay together."
Without doubt, it takes time for players to gel. Even some Heat players are suggesting that it may take much of the season for them to be nearly as comfortable with each other as the elite squads. Time for chemistry development does not seem to be enough to repair the Knicks woes, which center around sa lack of size and defensive philosophy and depth.
Is Amar'e right to back off his lofty sentiments expressed when he got that cruise ship load of money.
