After over a week of negotiations and discussions, Tom Izzo has rejected Dan Gilbert's overtures to coach the Cavaliers next season (ESPN) and to remain as leader of the Michigan State Spartans. In a statement released by the school, Izzo stated: "I'm pleased to say I am here for life at Michigan State."
The length and apparent intensity of the discussions leads observers to guess that LeBron's departure from Cleveland is imminent certain since Izzo reportedly hinged his final decision on assurances of LeBron's status as a future Cavalier. However Izzo's statement left few clues as to the intentions of LeBron and how they impacted his final decision. Izzo will appear at a press conference is scheduled for 8:30 pm tonight. It is expected that he will elaborate on the statement also included in the press release from the school:
"Throughout the entire process, Dan Gilbert and the entire Cleveland organization has been nothing but class. His professionalism and caring nature for me, my family and Michigan State have been impressive. I wish him nothing but the best in his quest to win a world championship," Izzo said in a statement released by the school. "Just as I decided to stay home, I hope a 6-8, 270-pound forward in Cleveland decides to stay home."
